R&D Device Engineer Co-op
Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is a leader in healthcare innovation, dedicated to developing treatments and cures for complex diseases. The R&D Device Engineer Co-op role involves designing, developing, and testing advanced urological drug delivery systems, providing students with hands-on experience in engineering and product development processes.
Pharmaceuticals
Responsibilities
You will work independently under the guidance and mentorship of a supervising engineer to advance design and manufacture of urological drug delivery systems, and you will function as a team contributor/collaborator within an engineering team
You will work on multiple engineering project teams balancing project tasks and communicating with both technical and managerial audiences
You will design and run experiments under engineering supervision
You will prepare samples for experimental testing which will include operating basic and advanced metrology tools and equipment such as contact-based direct dimensional measurement, mechanical load frames, and non-contact dimensional measurement such as high-magnification machine vision equipment and software
You will develop lab-scale machine-vision inspection methods and support method development and transfer to manufacturing partners
You will independently perform mechanical tests (load frames, force transducers) to evaluate material properties and functional performance of products, product systems, and product components
You will design and fabricate prototyping aids and test fixtures using 3D CAD modelling software, 3D printing resources, and basic model shop tools as required
You will maintain a laboratory notebook documenting your studies consistent with Quality System governance
You will participate in meetings with external partners and in design/technical reviews
You will support complaint investigations and root-cause analyses, as needed
You will author test protocols, reports, verification documentation, and other Quality System documentation, as needed
You will deliver a capstone oral presentation to the engineering team and other key department stakeholders at the end of the term highlighting your most significant contributions to the business
Qualification
Required
Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited BS (or dual BS/MS) program in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (other engineering majors with relevant experience will be considered) with GPA 3.0+
Completed or enrolled in calculus, physics, statics/dynamics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
Proficient with Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and cloud file sharing tools
Intrinsically motivated to engage in the engineering process (design, build, test, analyze, and iterate) with focus on independent, hands-on experimentation under guidance from senior engineering staff
Acute attention to detail
Self-aware of strengths and weaknesses with capacity for humility and resilience when encountering new or difficult challenges
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to document technical work clearly
Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future
Preferred
Experience with universal test systems/load frames (Instron/Zwick) and machine-vision equipment (Keyence)
Knowledge and/or practice of materials testing, metrology, elastomeric material manufacturing processes, computational modeling, and advanced statistical techniques
Design thinking commonly associated with the conceptualization of integrated mechanical systems
Creative, practical, and solution-driven problem-solving
3D CAD solid modelling (SolidWorks) and ASME Y14 drawing practices
Knowledge and/or practice of high-level computer programming
Algorithmic thinking commonly associated with the application of high-level programming languages (Python, MATLAB, R, C++/C#) for executing computational routines
Data collection and preparation for computational analysis using languages such as Python, MATLAB, C++
Familiarity with statistical analysis software like Minitab/JMP/SPSS, or statistical programming languages like R, C# or SAS, accompanied by ambition to learn and apply advanced statistical techniques
