Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Engineering of the Platform Engineering Team
Running a small team of 5-7 engineers efficiently, with plans to double it in 1-2 years. This isn't about empire building, this is about developing and coaching a small group of talented individuals to reach their full potential and maximize their impact
Being a coach, taking an active hands-on approach to supporting your team. Expecting that your time will be split between technical problem solving with your team, defining direction and helping individuals understand the right problems to solve, and closing the feedback loop with timely assessments
The tech stack includes Java and Spring
Managing 5-7 engineers to start, then hiring several more engineers. You could grow your team to 8-10 engineers in the next 2 years
It would be nice (not required) if you could also manage a couple DevOps Engineers
Leading your team to deliver high quality software at a fast pace
Taking ownership of quality and pace of your team's output
Leading by example and being a role model of company values: owning process and outcome, being curious, being a leader
Caring for your team members' career growth by developing and coaching them according to each individual's passions and strengths
Collaborating and coordinating with stakeholders and teams across the company to maximize your team's impact and influence
Time spent will be roughly as follows:
35% hands on problem solving, engineering design reviews, code reviews. At least 15% of time will be spent coding
30% technical vision, defining direction, helping people figure out what problems to solve and how to solve them
30% team assessments
Qualification
Required
Startup experience at 1 or more companies that were growing and were 100 people or more
At least 5 (ideally 10+) years of experience working in software engineering, with a focus on backend engineering for user-facing applications
At least 1 year (ideally 3+) years of experience leading or managing teams of high performing engineers, in person
Strong in at least one of these programming languages, in order of preference: 1) Java, 2) Go or Python, 3) Node.js, C, or C++. Willing to learn (if necessary) and primarily work with Java
Strong computer science fundamentals
Strong systems level architecture, performance, scalability, and reliability experience
Strong understanding of infrastructure like cloud services, third party services, CI/CD pipelines, and observability experience
Demonstrated success in leading, growing, and coaching a small engineering team in fast-paced environments
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
Excellent communication skills
Strong experience in one of these relevant areas of specialty: backend server, platform engineering, distributed systems, developer productivity, growth, or internal tools
Not specialized in one of these irrelevant areas: infrastructure, data engineering, machine learning, big data
Preferred
It would be nice (not required) if you could also manage a couple DevOps Engineers
