Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy. They are seeking a Cryogenics Engineering Intern to work on engineering design and analysis, develop test plans, and lead projects related to cryogenic helium systems.

Responsibilities

Lead and cross-coordinate with various stakeholders on design-build, test, and/or analysis projects, ensuring requirements and key system objectives are being met
Develop test plans for cryogenics equipment and subsystems
Identify, purchase, and install hardware to be used in setting up or fixing test configurations
Run testing of industrial-scale cryogenics equipment and subsystems
Analyze data from testing industrial-scale cryogenics equipment and subsystems
Learning objectives would include but not be limited to:
(1) Process engineering. Read and develop key engineering documents, e.g. process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), test plans, test procedures
(2) Thermohydraulics analysis. Develop calculations, tools, and models, e.g. Excel calculations and tools, 1-D thermohydraulic models (EcoSim), computational fluid dynamics (COMSOL)
(3) Project management. Build tools to manage and report on project milestones. Manage small budgets
(4) Hands-on building and testing. Past examples - flow instrumentation panels, vacuum carts and headers, swagelok tubing setups, helium leak testing configurations, oil removal bakeouts, helium purity measurement and calibration

Required

Currently enrolled college students in all levels of schooling from bachelor's degree to PhD
Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer
Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics

Preferred

Preferred majors include Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Software Engineering, and Computer Science
Enthusiasm to learn (design and engineering company processes) and collaborate in a group setting
Exposure to fluid dynamics and thermodynamics
Exposure to programmable logic controllers and electrical schematics
Exposure to CAD software
Exposure to FEA and/or CFD software
Interest in entrepreneurship
