Information Technology & Services

Responsibilities

Assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records, ensuring compliance with coding standards and regulatory requirements
Review clinical documentation thoroughly to abstract relevant data elements, supporting accurate coding and billing processes
Maintain and update a comprehensive and high-quality patient clinical database to facilitate effective reimbursement and reporting
Conduct monthly reviews of Evaluation & Management (E&M) levels selected by physicians, providing constructive feedback to promote coding accuracy and awareness
Collaborate closely with physicians and clinical staff to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies
Stay current with changes in coding guidelines, industry standards, and regulatory policies to ensure ongoing compliance
Participate in ongoing education and training sessions to enhance coding skills and knowledge
Assist in internal audits and support external audit processes to verify coding accuracy and compliance

Required

High school diploma or equivalent required
Certification in medical coding such as CPC, CPC-H (preferred over CPC-H), and ICD-10 certification is mandatory. Credentials must be current and maintained
Proficiency in computer and data entry skills, with a thorough understanding of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT-4 classification systems
Minimum of one year of experience as a certified coder, involving actual coding and abstracting from documentation in a physician practice setting. Alternatively, a certified CPC with at least six months of experience and a minimum of three years of abstract coding experience is acceptable
Ability to pass an internal coding assessment within three months of employment
