Education Program Coordinator

The Portland Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to enriching lives through music and is seeking an Education Program Coordinator to support their education programs. This role involves collaborating with the Director of Learning and Community Impact to execute educational initiatives, provide narration for concerts, and build relationships with schools and community organizations.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with the Director of Learning and Community Impact to plan and execute key education programs, including the PSO Explorers Program, KinderKonzerts, Youth Concerts, Discovery Concerts, exercising progressional judgment in program design, implementation, and evaluation
Lead the narration, script writing, and interpretive delivery of all KinderKonzert programming alongside PSO KinderKonzert musicians, ensuring content is educational, engaging, and aligned with program goals
Provide narration support, when needed, and lead script writing for all Discovery and Youth Concerts alongside the full orchestra
Provide administrative support for the PSO Children’s Chorus
Provide insightful and strategic feedback to guide the education programs forward, working collaboratively with the Director of Learning and Community Impact to implement programming developments and new initiatives
Communicate regularly, internally and externally, to keep all parties appropriately engaged and informed
Provide scheduling and coordination support for education programs
Develop narration scripts and preparatory materials for education programs
Cultivate strong relationships with musicians, trustees, colleagues, educators, school systems, volunteers and other area community organizations
Engage in collaboration with musicians, staff, and external partners in program planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives
Develop and maintain relationships with education leaders, community partners, and supporters to enhance PSO’s relationship in the community

Required

Music Education experience required, classroom teaching experience strongly preferred
Excellent verbal communication skills required, public speaking and/or acting/narration experience strongly preferred
Strong written communication skills required, experience writing for children's programming and/or script writing strongly preferred
Strong interpersonal skills and experience working directly with a wide range of educational and community organizations
Ability to support multiple projects in many stages at once, thriving in a fast-paced environment
Collaborative and effective team player
Strong computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs, including but not limited to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required
English fluency required. Fluency in other languages a plus
Ability to work varied hours, including mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays (accommodations can be made for holidays according to one's individual beliefs)
Smartphone available to support Microsoft office and PSO Phone apps
Driver's license, with a clean driving record and a reliable vehicle. The PSO may require a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and background check as a condition of employment. Continued employment is contingent on maintaining a clean and insurable driving record
Ability to travel, primarily locally, throughout Maine and New Hampshire is required
Ability to reach, push, pull, bend, stoop, or stand as necessary. Will frequently lift instruments and teaching materials weighing up to 50 pounds
