Software Engineer

Responsibilities

Design, build, test, and maintain backend services that power PayPal’s credit products
Contribute to the development of RESTful APIs and microservices used across credit workflows
Implement features that support the credit application journey, including offers and eligibility, applications, and account management
Write high-quality, well-tested code with a focus on reliability, security, and performance
Participate in design discussions and code reviews to improve system quality and maintainability
Work with product, risk, compliance, and engineering partners to understand requirements and deliver solutions
Help operate and support services in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident response
Continuously improve system scalability, performance, and operational readiness

Required

1+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience
Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
3+ years of professional experience in software engineering
3+ years in Java, with experience building RESTful APIs using Spring Boot or similar frameworks
Experience developing microservices or backend systems in a production environment
Experience with relational databases (Oracle, MySQL), NoSQL databases (DynamoDB), or analytical data warehouses (BigQuery)
Working knowledge of data modeling and SQL fundamentals
Experience with event-driven or asynchronous systems using messaging or streaming platforms such as Kafka or Pulsar
Ability to write reliable, maintainable, and secure code
Strong collaboration and communication skills

Preferred

Experience building distributed systems or high-availability services
Exposure to cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS
Experience in payments, credit, or other financial services domains
Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and operational best practices
