Engineer-in-Training I - Greeley
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is seeking an Engineer-in-Training I in their Region 4 North Engineering Program. This position involves applying engineering principles to highway projects under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, while gaining experience in project oversight and documentation.

Responsibilities
Learn to plan, organize, and manage studies that involve analysis towards identifying engineering solutions and assessing potential impact of projects
Prepare quality engineering plans, specifications, and estimates (PS & E) for roadway designs by applying current engineering principles and theories, design specifications, and Federal, State, and local design standards to develop safe, efficient, and economical project designs
Assist with ensuring that the planning process and design complies with applicable study requirements, the project scope, schedule, budget, and current design engineering criteria, standards, practices, theories and procedures
Make recommendations regarding layouts, alignments, standard designs, tabulations, specifications, quantities, acquisitions and clearances
Make design decisions utilizing roadway software to design the roadway profile to optimize construction considerations such as: earthwork, construction phasing, and drainage considerations
Make design decisions related to roadside design such as appropriate placement of signs and barriers
Learn to prepare and maintain appropriate project management documentation as required including a communication plan, risk analysis, and project estimates
Prepare meeting minutes for project meetings; maintain project correspondence files
Request field surveys, environmental studies, traffic studies, right-of-way information, hydrology/hydraulic designs, structural designs, utility location/relocations, and other information as required. Ensure project work complies with the stewardship agreement when utilizing FHWA funds
Coordinate with entities and specialty units concerned, involved or otherwise connected to the development and completion of projects to satisfy our needs and theirs to further the design process
Communicate federal requirements to agencies and facilitate communication between CDOT specialty units, local agency, and other entities
Perform duties on common/regular projects with minimal direction from a Licensed Professional Engineer
Provide office engineering support by checking project item documentation, recording contractor manpower and equipment, and monitoring daily traffic control

Qualification
Required
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or engineering technology, preferably civil engineering
Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors OR Current enrollment as a licensed Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may substitute
Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position
It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors, hereafter referred to as the Board, within three years of appointment to the position
Individuals must also obtain licensure as a professional engineer by the Board within eight years of appointment to the position

Highest work/personal ethics and integrity
Experience with Bentley's OpenRoads Designer and/or suite of Bentley Design software
Fluency in MS Word, MS Excel, Google Suite, SAP, MicroStation and lnRoads; AASHTOware Project, PMWeb, ProjectWise, and the ability to learn new software
Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and registered as an Engineer Intern with the State of Colorado
Ability and willingness to maintain working knowledge of civil engineering design and construction processes, theories, laws, principles, conceptual models, and best practices, especially for transportation related projects
Familiarity with rules/regulations/manuals such as: CDOT Design, Construction, & Materials Manuals, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), CDOT Planning and Environmental Linkages Manual, Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG), M&S Standards and Specifications, AASHTO Design Guides and standards
Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment
Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments
Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations
