Intern, Controls Engineer

ENGIE North America is seeking a Controls Engineering Intern to support industrial control systems and automation platforms for the University of Iowa utility network. The role involves programming support, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining ICS asset records, providing hands-on experience in controls engineering and industrial automation.

Responsibilities

Support troubleshooting, testing, and documentation of ICS/OT systems
Assist in updating control sequences, configurations, and networking components
Contribute to ICS cybersecurity testing and control validation
Maintain ICS asset records and reliability/maintenance documentation in Maximo
Assist with technical documentation and project coordination
Perform other duties as needed

Required

Currently enrolled at the University of Iowa or Kirkwood Community College in a relevant engineering or applied engineering technology program such as Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, or Industrial Maintenance
Computer Science students may be considered with relevant project or coursework experience
No prior professional experience is required
Have an interest in control systems, PLCs/HMIs, automation, instrumentation, industrial networking, reliability/asset management, or ICS security
Willingness to learn Maximo, IEC 61131 ‑ 3 programming, and industrial communication protocols
Strong troubleshooting, communication, and safety awareness
Interns must be enrolled students in good standing at the commencement of the intern semester
On ‑ site attendance required (20–40 hours/week, depending on academic schedule)
Valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving record (may involve use of a company vehicle)
Ability to climb stairs/ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, and wear required PPE
Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
