2026-BWS-007-Laboratory Intern – Kingston
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is committed to enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for New Yorkers. As a Laboratory Intern in the Bureau of Water Supply, the intern will assist with various laboratory analyses related to water quality and develop a final presentation for the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.

Responsibilities
Assist with a variety of laboratory analyses relating to water quality including lead and copper turbidities, specific conductance, pH, chlorophyll sample preparation, UV254, sample reception, cryptosporidium and giardia sample preparation, dishwashing and autoclaving sample bottles, bottle preparation and water sample collection
Comply with all environmental, health and safety laws, as well as agency policies
Develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony
Qualification
Required
As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year)
Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year
Preferred
Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science, ecology, or other related field of study
Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
Familiarity or experience with MS Office suite, including spreadsheets and large data sets
General understanding of laboratory operations
Strong writing skills
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Leadership skills including self motivation and ability to work well independently and with others, with minimal supervision and a willingness to learn
