The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to enriching the environment and protecting public health for New Yorkers by managing water resources. The Water Quality Modeling intern will analyze historical data and assist in developing models for forecasting streamflow and water quality, while also adhering to environmental regulations and presenting findings at the intern closing ceremony.
Environmental Services

Responsibilities

Analyzing a database of historical meteorological, hydrologic, stream and reservoir water quality data
Calibrating and validating process-based stream and reservoir water quality models
Developing and testing alternative approaches such as data-driven, machine learning based models for forecasting streamflow and water quality
Comparing performance of such models with that of process-based models
Analyzing constituents such as sediment, carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen from streams that are tributaries to DEP reservoirs
Working predominantly in an office although some field work may be required
Adhering to and complying with all environmental, health and safety laws, Agency policies, rules, and regulations
Developing a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony

Required

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school

Preferred

Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university in a Science/Engineering graduate program (MS or PhD)
Experience in machine learning (eg neural networks) techniques
Statistical analysis of environmental data
Familiarity with hydrogeologic processes
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment
Strong writing skills
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Familiarity or experience with MS Office suite
Leadership skills including self motivation and ability to work well independently and with others, with minimal supervision and a willingness to learn
