HBCU Roadway Design Unit Intern

The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking a motivated intern for their Roadway Design Unit to gain hands-on experience in roadway design. Responsibilities

Complete ORD CADD training modules as part of a structured training-style project
Work with a Team Lead to develop roadway design skills and complete an example roadway project
Apply engineering principles, mathematics, and computer-aided design (CADD) tools in a practical setting
Collaborate with supervisors and team members on a daily basis to support learning and project development
Assist with roadway design-related work on active projects upon successful completion of training modules, as scheduling allows
Strengthen oral and written communication skills through regular check-ins and a final presentation to unit leadership summarizing the training project and internship experience

Required

Currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) by May, 2026
24 credit hours completed
Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship

Preferred

Students majoring in or with coursework in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Design, Construction, or Computer Science or closely related field are encouraged to apply
Interest in transportation design and infrastructure development
Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills
Familiarity or interest in computer-aided design (CADD) tools
Effective oral and written communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, onsite environment
