Hybrid Electrical & Embedded Systems Engineer
Speck Design is seeking a Contract Hybrid Electrical & Embedded Systems Engineer to support the development of custom electronic products from concept through prototype and early production. This role involves electrical hardware design, embedded firmware development, and collaboration with internal engineering and industrial design teams on multi-disciplinary product development programs.

Responsibilities
Design schematics and PCBs for embedded systems using Altium Designer
Select components, create BOMs, and support sourcing
Design power architectures (battery systems, chargers, DC-DC converters, protection)
Design digital and analog circuits (MCUs, sensors, ADCs/DACs, communication interfaces)
Support PCB bring-up, debugging, and validation
Develop firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers, primarily:
ESP32 family (using ESP-IDF, not Arduino)
STMicroelectronics 32-bit MCUs
Implement drivers for peripherals (I2C, SPI, UART, ADC, PWM, GPIO)
Develop BLE, Wi-Fi, and networking applications
Build bootloaders, OTA update mechanisms, and secure firmware architectures
Debug using JTAG, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes
Bring up new hardware platforms and validate full system operation
Collaborate with mechanical and industrial design teams on form-factor and integration constraints
Create test firmware and production support tools
Qualification
Required
B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
5+ years of hands-on embedded product development experience
Strong schematic and PCB design experience in Altium Designer
Strong C/C++ embedded programming skills
Experience with ESP32 using ESP-IDF
Comfortable debugging hardware and firmware simultaneously
Self-directed and able to work independently in a contract environment
Preferred
Experience taking products from prototype to early production
Familiarity with compliance concepts (FCC/CE, EMI/ESD, safety)
Experience supporting manufacturing and test fixtures
Mobile app development for internal or demo tools (iOS/Android, Swift, Kotlin, or cross-platform)
Linux-based embedded systems experience
NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX platform experience
Basic cloud integration (MQTT, REST, AWS IoT, etc.)
