Maintenance Intern (Trade School)

Hanwha Philly Shipyard is seeking a Maintenance Intern to provide hands-on exposure to industrial maintenance operations in a shipbuilding and repair environment. The intern will work alongside experienced technicians to support the reliability and efficiency of facilities and equipment, gaining real-world experience in preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

Ensure that all PSI safety procedures, rules and regulations are followed and met
Assist maintenance technicians with routine preventive and corrective maintenance tasks
Support inspections, basic troubleshooting, and minor repairs of mechanical, electrical, and facility systems
Help maintain facility & maintenance logs, work orders, and documentation
Observe and support equipment shutdowns, startups, and safety lockout/tagout procedures
Participate in facility upkeep, including lighting, HVAC support, plumbing, and general shop maintenance
Assist with tracking work orders, service requests, and vendor documentation
Assist with inventory tracking of tools, spare parts, and supplies
Support space planning, signage, and workplace organization initiatives
Maintain accurate records, drawings, and facility documentation
Respond quickly in the event of an emergency, notify appropriate personnel and follow safety protocol

Required

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent education required
Must be at least 18 years of age
Currently enrolled in a technical school, community college, or university program related to: Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical or Electrical Technology, Facilities Management, Carpentry, Electrical, or Power Plant
Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical manuals
Ability to use electrical and mechanical test equipment (Multimeters, meggars, voltage testers, micrometers, gauges, etc.)
Ability to use various tools and understand basic skills in the following areas; rigging, welding, pipefitting, machining, electrical and electronic troubleshooting
Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
Strong attention to safety and detail
Mechanical Aptitude – Demonstrates basic understanding of mechanical systems, tools, and equipment
Electrical Awareness – Understands fundamental electrical concepts and safe work practices
Preventive Maintenance Mindset – Recognizes the importance of routine inspections and upkeep
Tool & Equipment Handling – Uses hand and basic power tools safely and correctly
Safety Consciousness – Follows safety procedures, PPE requirements, and lockout/tagout protocols
Attention to Detail – Notices potential hazards, defects, or irregularities
Housekeeping- Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas
Communication- Able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
Organizational- Manages time effectively to complete assigned tasks within established timelines
Adaptability-Adjusts quickly to changing priorities, work assignments, and environments common in an active shipyard
Team Collaboration-Willingness and ability to work as a team member
