Power System Engineer- Data Center
Virginia Transformer Corp. is the largest U.S.-owned producer of power transformers in North America, and they are seeking a highly experienced Power System Consultant / Field Application Engineer to support the application and integration of large power transformers within data center environments. This role involves serving as a senior technical advisor, ensuring transformer solutions meet the performance and reliability requirements demanded by modern data centers.

Responsibilities
Serve as the primary technical liaison for transformer applications within data center power systems
Support high-voltage interconnection strategies (69kV and above), redundancy configurations (N+1, 2N), and mission-critical infrastructure requirements
Interpret customer specifications including uptime, short-circuit requirements, harmonic considerations, and fault tolerance expectations
Develop transformer application strategies aligned with hyperscale and colocation operator standards
Provide pre-sale technical consultation for data center projects including specification review and system configuration support
Analyze one-line diagrams and power system layouts to ensure proper transformer integration
Support EPC firms and consultants with voltage input/output configurations and system coordination
Assist with preparation of technical proposals, compliance matrices, and engineering documentation
Collaborate closely with design teams to translate system requirements into manufacturable transformer solutions
Support installation, testing, commissioning, and energization of transformers within data center facilities
Conduct site visits to support project milestones, outage coordination, and system integration
Diagnose and troubleshoot transformer performance or integration issues in mission-critical environments
Document field findings and communicate feedback to engineering and product development teams
Design and review transformer applications in coordination with protection schemes, grounding systems, and grid interconnection requirements
Conduct system-level analysis including load growth projections and redundancy planning
Utilize and interpret power system engineering tools (ETAP or similar)
Provide technical presentations and training to data center developers, consultants, and internal teams
Maintain current knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, IEC, NERC, and evolving data center electrical standards
Support customers in meeting utility, regulatory, and grid integration requirements
Provide guidance related to reliability standards and mission-critical infrastructure design
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
Minimum 15 years of experience in transformer applications and power systems engineering
In-depth knowledge of large power transformers (69kV and above)
Strong experience supporting data center, mission-critical, industrial, or utility-scale power systems
Ability to travel up to 50% domestically
Exceptional communication skills with both technical and executive stakeholders
Experience with ETAP or similar power system analysis software
Preferred
Master's in Power Systems
Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility
Experience with redundancy architectures (N+1, 2N, 2N+1)
Strong understanding of grid integration and protection schemes
