Oncology Data Specialist

Responsibilities

Maintain a follow up success rate of at least 90% for cases abstracted in a five-year timeframe, 80% for entire database
Timely and complete abstracting reviewing at the required standard that is dependent on the annual caseload
Maintain minimally, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Department of Health standard, a data quality level of at least 97% for data items reviewed if facility is located in Pennsylvania
Perform other functions and tasks required to maintain a current and accurate database and stay in compliance with the requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health (if facility is located in Pennsylvania), and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO)

Required

Completion of a registry training program or direct experience in a cancer registry setting
Minimum 1 year of oncology or abstracting experience
High school diploma required
1 year oncology or abstracting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required
Proficient in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, abstracting techniques, AJCC and SEER summary staging systems, ICDO, ICD-9-CM, and/or other clinical coding systems
Experience with hospital data systems, Microsoft Office software products and/or personal computers
Accurate and efficient keyboarding skills necessary to meet productivity standards

Preferred

ODS certification is preferred but not required
A team-oriented mindset
Associate's or B.S. degree in Health Information Management preferred
Registry experience or education are preferred
Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) preferred
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred
