Lead AI Counsel

U.S. Bank is seeking an experienced attorney to join their Operations, Technology and Regulatory Team as the Lead AI Counsel. This role focuses on providing legal and regulatory leadership for AI initiatives, ensuring compliance with financial services laws and standards while partnering with various teams across the organization.

Responsibilities

Interpret and advise on emerging AI-related laws, regulations, and guidance (e.g., banking regulations, consumer protection, data privacy, algorithmic accountability, AI safety requirements)
Monitor global regulatory developments related to AI and machine learning and assess impact on enterprise strategy and operations
Partner with risk and technology teams to advise on legal risks associated with training data, model transparency, bias mitigation, and system outputs
Provide practical legal guidance in the design and deployment of generative AI and automated decisioning systems
Provide assistance to the Procurement team with review and negotiating contracts with AI vendors, cloud providers, and data licensors
Educate Law Division and business leaders on AI-related legal risks and opportunities
Work with Legal Operations to develop strategy for Law Division’s use of AI

Qualification

Required

Licensed by and in good standing with the appropriate state bar association or other appropriate state attorney licensing authority
10+ years of legal experience, with significant experience in financial services, technology, or regulatory counseling
Expertise in AI/ML technology issues, privacy law, and data governance
Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives in highly regulated environments
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred

Experience advising on generative AI, large language models, and advanced analytics
Experience working in-house at a major bank, fintech, payments company, or regulatory agency
Familiarity with global AI frameworks (e.g., EU AI Act, UK AI regulations, emerging U.S. federal and state AI legislation)
Technical fluency or advanced comfort with data science concepts
Prior leadership of a legal team focused on technology or AI governance
