Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, specializing in the design and construction of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines. They are seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to lead engineering efforts related to the inactivation and disposal of CVN68 Class carriers, including various engineering studies and interfacing with multiple disciplines and organizations.

Responsibilities
Conducting and leading engineering efforts associated with the inactivation/disposal of CVN68 Class carriers
Development and application of governing specifications, various engineering studies, and interfacing with multiple disciplines, organizations, and the government to support efficient and effective planning and execution of inactivation efforts
Specific task areas include residual water determinations, review and update of inactivation guidelines, dismantlement studies, shipboard technical support, equipment reutilization management, and environmental impact studies
Performing engineering calculations, analyses, cost benefit analysis, risk assessments and studies to support planning decisions
Shipboard visits may be necessary for problem resolution and may involve access to radiological areas
Researching, planning, designing and developing mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy
Applying research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
A working understanding of reactor plant systems and governing design documents is required as well as a familiarization with Propulsion Plant systems
The incumbent will be capable of performing engineering calculations, analyses, cost benefit analysis, risk assessments and studies to support planning decisions
Preferred
Experience with engineering drawings, piping and mechanical systems, and working to established specifications and standards
Experience with Nuclear Temporary Support systems and working experience with radiological work practices
Demonstrated ability to work independently, establish plans and milestones for accomplishment of significant projects, and lead and provide oversight for the work of other engineers
Experience with the Availability Work Package (AWP) development process
Knowledge and prior experience with 3-D modeling and drafting programs, such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor
Excellent communication, and organizational skills as well as experience and proficiency with formal written technical communication
