Program Research Specialist 1 / Program Research Specialist Trainee 1/2 (NS) NYS HELPS
New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is focused on enhancing sustainability across state parks. The Program Research Specialist 1/Trainee will assist in managing and implementing sustainability programs, develop educational materials, and engage with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Agency Sustainability Manager to develop and implement waste reduction, energy efficiency, and broader sustainability programs across state parks
Ensure alignment of park activities with sustainability goals outlined in NYS EO22
Coordinate with park managers and regional staff to integrate sustainability practices into daily operations
Develop and deliver educational programs and materials to promote sustainable practices among park staff, volunteers, and visitors
Engage with staff, local communities and stakeholders to foster partnerships and support for sustainability initiatives
Assist in monitoring the effectiveness of sustainability programs and initiatives, including waste reduction efforts and energy efficiency measures
Collect and analyze data to assess progress towards sustainability targets and identify areas for improvement
Prepare reports and presentations on sustainability metrics and achievements for internal and external stakeholders
Manage various sustainability projects within state parks, ensuring timely implementation and adherence to project goals
Collaborate with park staff and external partners to plan and execute initiatives related to green purchasing, pollution reduction, and resource conservation
Foster relationships with concessionaires, Friends Groups, and community organizations to promote sustainability initiatives and secure support for projects
Represent state parks in sustainability meetings, conferences, and public forums to advocate for environmental stewardship
Assist in ensuring compliance with state regulations and guidelines related to environmental sustainability and waste management
Support in preparing documentation and reports required for regulatory compliance and funding opportunities
Qualification
Required
A bachelor's degree or higher including or supplemented by nine semester credit hours in biostatistics, data analysis, or data modeling, economics, econometrics, mathematics, research methods, or statistics
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education
If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency
If you have previous or current employment at a NYS agency, to be considered for this position, a review of your state history is needed
Candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position

A bachelor's degree or higher including or supplemented by nine semester credit hours in biostatistics, data analysis, or data modeling, economics, econometrics, mathematics, research methods, or statistics, and one year of professional research experience for Program Research Specialist Trainee 2
Either a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by nine semester credit hours in biostatistics, data analysis, data modeling, economics, econometrics, mathematics, research methods, or statistics and two years of professional research experience or a master's degree or higher including or supplemented by nine semester credit hours in biostatistics, data analysis, or data modeling, economics, econometrics, mathematics, research methods, or statistics and one year of professional research experience for Program Research Specialist 1
