Sr Research Engineer

Responsibilities

Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the work of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Interface with corporate partners, Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) project managers, and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) research management for the aforementioned clinical trial. Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of a home-based clinical trial. (27%)
Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals/objectives. Develop ocular motor training and assessment VR software. Create new technical methodology or content through expansion of existing VR ocular motor assessment and intervention applications. Contribute to or lead major human-computer interface and neurorehabilitation development activities. Provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities; use peer networks to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities. (30%)
Contribute to the preparation and presentation of science concept review requirements definition review, preliminary design review and critical design review documents. Present at academic meetings, author papers, or participate in external seminars, workshops, professional societies and committees. Identify grant extensions and persuade grantors to fund related work; impact grantor decisions and strategies. Understand broad strategic objectives and contribute to them; nurture and maintain relationships with major grantors of external research and development grant funding. Extend technology into new application areas. (20%)
Provide substantial contributions to reports and publications; author/ co-author on papers, proposals, presentations and reports; may give invited papers. Engage in technology transfer, initiate new project concepts and seek funding; develop technical proposals and make presentations to potential customers or grantors. (17%)

Required

Doctorate and 2 years of related experience OR Master's degree and 4 years of related experience in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, neural engineering, computer science, computer engineering, medicine, neuroscience, virtual reality, human computer interfaces, or ocular motor dysfunction related to the vestibular ocular reflex, traumatic brain injury, or convergence insufficiency
Valid driver's license
Established technical expertise in immersive VR ocular motor assessment and intervention
Ability to apply a comprehensive knowledge of human-computer interfaces
Ability to develop immersive VR software in software including Unity engine and Steam VR for VARJO and Meta Quest VR headsets and assessment software
Experience using GitHub for distributed Unity software development
Experience in presentation and authorship in flagship academic meetings and top quartile neurology, neuroscience, neural engineering, or rehabilitation journals
Experience reviewing for academic journals
Experience mentoring research trainees and students
Experience working in the Cleveland Dept. of VA research environment, including ability to complete Dept. of VA health and background evaluations
Independent clinical research experience, including institutional review board protocol application, participant recruiting and informed consent, protocol implementation, quantitative data collection and analysis, qualitative data collection and analysis, and dissemination of results
Experience in invention disclosure, technology transfer, and patent application of research inventions
Good Clinical Practice accreditation or certification for human research
Graduate-level training and academic dissemination in related field
Ability to travel to participant homes for device setup and troubleshooting
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest
Ability to meet consistent attendance
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face
Willingness to learn and work with artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies
