The Engineer Structural 3 will analyze and develop structural engineering specifications and lead efforts in ship alteration development and structural design, particularly for CVN68 Class aircraft carriers.

Responsibilities

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs
Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
Lead various efforts in the areas of ship alteration development, structural foundation design, nuclear lifting and handling, the application of advanced coatings, and the maintenance of nuclear cognizant structure
Oversee larger projects and provide oversight and direction for less experienced engineers in these areas
Mentor junior engineers and develop / execute training objectives that will support their growth to fill leadership roles in the future
Develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Significant experience with the development of both nuclear and non-nuclear structural ship alteration products
Direct experience in this area for CVN68 Class ships is preferred
Experience with structural foundation drawings
Experience with the fabrication and welding of ship's structure
Experience with non-destructive test requirements for structural welds
Experience working with nuclear lifting and handling requirements
Proficiency with the development of associated component handling procedures and calculation methodologies
Ability to support CVN68 Class operational readiness through adjudication of LARs and other special studies
Strong leadership skills

Writing skills
Ability to mentor junior engineers
Ability to develop / execute training objectives
Self-starter
