Corporate Vice President, State Governmental Affairs Lobbyist

New York Life is seeking a proactive team player for the Office of Governmental Affairs who will engage in policy education and advocacy activities with state legislatures and insurance regulators. The role involves consulting with business experts and governmental affairs colleagues to develop advocacy strategies aimed at achieving favorable legislative and regulatory outcomes.

Responsibilities

Build and sustain relationships with governors’ offices, legislators, and regulators; lead direct advocacy with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, state insurance departments, and state legislatures
Provide strategic leadership on assigned issue areas and key states; analyze legislative, regulatory and public policy environment; proactively provide timely substantive and political analysis, updates and memos on related developments
Shape and advance NYL’s agenda by working closely with senior NYL executives and the governmental affairs team to formulate the company’s position and implement NYL’s legislative and regulatory strategy
Lead engagement with trade associations, peer companies, external lobbyists, and coalitions on complex policy issues to ensure NYL’s agenda is prioritized
Collaborate with other members of the governmental affairs team on priority issues and tasks

Required

5-7 years' experience in a legislative, regulatory or governmental affairs environment
Proven record of successful, strategic engagement with policymakers, including demonstrated strong advocacy skills and ability to develop meaningful relationships with public policymakers
Knowledge of and experience with insurance-related public policy issues
Ability to analyze and summarize legislative and regulatory proposals
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with significant writing responsibilities
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface with senior NYL executives and public officials
Willingness to travel to NAIC meetings, Washington D.C, and key states when needed
Given the nature of the role, candidate should live within a commutable distance of Sacramento or New York City

Preferred

Insurance industry and state government experience strongly preferred
Bachelor's degree preferred
Relevant advanced degree, including a law degree, is preferred
