Video Quality & Automation Engineer, Data Analyst
Confidential is seeking a Video Quality & Automation Engineer / Data Analyst to support a video quality initiative for a large-scale messaging platform. The role focuses on Python development, media processing, automation, API integration, dataset analysis, quality validation, and comparing human ratings with technical video quality metrics.

Responsibilities
Develop **Python scripts and large-scale automation workflows** to generate videos across a range of quality levels and conditions
Evaluate video and image datasets and identify representative samples for quality assessment and algorithm evaluation
Generate large corpora of encoded videos from reference media sets
Build scalable processing pipelines that apply different post-processing techniques and controlled quality variations to video content
Use **FFmpeg and GPU-based processing/shaders** to programmatically introduce and manipulate video characteristics and quality artifacts
Interface with internal **REST APIs and lab infrastructure** to generate baseline video sets using real devices and application environments
Perform manual spot checks and validation of generated media to ensure data integrity and adherence to quality standards
Ingest, clean, validate, and analyze video quality ratings collected from external/crowdsourced rating vendors
Develop scripts to transform and format rating datasets for downstream **machine learning and analytics workflows**
Analyze human perception/rating data alongside existing technical video quality metrics to identify discrepancies and trends
Investigate cases where technical metrics do not accurately reflect human ratings and identify potential gaps in existing quality models
Generate targeted media samples to further investigate identified metric gaps and support improvements to technical quality evaluation
Establish validation sets and expected metric movements to identify instances where technical metrics do not behave as expected
Compile findings, quality metrics, and analytical results into clear reports for engineering and research stakeholders
Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and cross-functional partners to translate analytical findings into actionable data and automation requirements
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field
**3–5 years of hands-on technical experience** in software engineering, automation engineering, data engineering, media processing, or a related discipline
Strong **Python programming and scripting** experience
Demonstrated experience building **automation workflows at scale**
Experience working with **REST APIs or internal APIs**
Hands-on experience with **FFmpeg or similar video/media processing tools**
Experience programmatically manipulating media properties or generating media datasets
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret datasets, identify patterns, and investigate anomalies
Experience cleaning, transforming, formatting, and validating data for downstream applications
Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to perform **quality assurance and manual validation** of generated media or datasets
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced technical environment and translate ambiguous requirements into practical engineering solutions
Preferred
Experience with video quality assessment metrics such as **VMAF, PSNR, or SSIM**
Understanding of video encoding, compression, streaming, or audio/video processing technologies
Experience with real-device testing frameworks or mobile application automation
Experience working with media pipelines within a mobile or messaging application ecosystem
Familiarity with machine learning data pipelines or feature-store integrations
Experience working with crowdsourced or human-rated datasets
Experience comparing subjective/human ratings against objective technical quality metrics
Familiarity with GPU shaders or GPU-accelerated media processing
Experience developing data validation frameworks or automated quality checks
Familiarity with modern **AI-assisted coding and developer productivity tools**
Previous experience working in a large-scale consumer technology environment is a plus
