Responsibilities

Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other agencies, laboratories, organizations, institutions and individuals in meeting program needs and objectives.
Participates as the WS representative, providing coordination of disease management actions and communications related to disease control and surveillance activities.
Represents the National Wildlife Disease Coordinator and Assistant Coordinators at various meetings, councils and conferences to provide program overviews, accomplishments and scientific findings.
Drafts such overviews, presentations and publications in consultation with Supervisor.
Determines the types of logistical and personnel support for wildlife disease surveillance activities and pre and post sampling activities.
Participates in disease control activities, develops cooperative relationships, and assists the states and other agencies in accomplishing wildlife disease control objectives.
Responsible for drafting documents and providing written and oral guidance on collecting, preserving, and shipping biological samples from a variety of animal species.
Responsible for gathering, compiling, and analyzing data collected from disease control and surveillance activities.
Responds to emergency disease outbreaks involving foreign animal, zoonotic, or other diseases where wildlife may be involved.

Required

You must be a US Citizen or US National.
Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
Direct Deposit: Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
Testing Designated Position: Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter.
Operation of Government-owned or leased, as well as State-owned, vehicles may be required. Government issued driver's license required.
All USDA employees are required to be enrolled in Continuous Vetting.
There is regular and recurring exposure to moderate risk and discomfort, such as adverse weather conditions, noisy environments and work with the aerial operations crew.
The incumbent will often work with biological specimens that may contain pathogens, and hazardous chemicals such as sedatives and anesthetics.
The incumbent is expected to conduct all duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to injure self or fellow workers.
The incumbent may be required to receive pre-exposure and post-exposure vaccinations to prevent contacting preventable diseases.
TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: 0401: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
0486: Degree: biological science that included: At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology.
At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects.
At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Communicated with and managed wildlife personnel in emergency responses for disease outbreaks and natural disasters.
Developed training opportunities for wildlife biologist to serve as first responders for emergency responses.
Coordinated emergency response for disease outbreaks, including personal protective equipment, supplies, medical monitoring and sample collection and submission.
Coordinated with other Federal Agencies in preparing for natural disasters.
Education Substitution for 0401: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the position.
Education Substitution for 0486: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
