Responsibilities

Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with tribal leaders, tribal emergency managers, and other key stakeholders within tribal communities.
Ensuring ongoing communications with tribal nations when emergencies occur.
Demonstrating cultural competency and sensitivity to the customs, traditions, and sovereignty of tribal nations. Recognizing and respecting the autonomy of tribal governments in emergency management decision-making processes.
Advocating for the inclusion of tribal perspectives and priorities in FEMA's policies, programs, and initiatives.
Providing training and technical assistance to tribal governments to enhance their emergency management capabilities. This may include offering workshops on topics such as disaster preparedness, response planning, and grant application procedures.
Overall, the Tribal Liaison plays a crucial role in ensuring that FEMA's emergency management efforts are inclusive, responsive, and culturally appropriate for tribal communities within Region 5. By fostering collaboration and communication between FEMA and tribal governments, the Tribal Liaison helps to strengthen the resilience of tribal nations in the face of disasters and emergencies.

Required

Must be located or willing to relocate to the following states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
You must be a U.S. citizen to apply for this position.
You must successfully pass a background investigation.
Selective Service registration required.
You must be able to obtain and maintain a Government credit card.
You must be able to deploy with little or no advance notice to anywhere in the United States and its territories for an extended period of time.
To qualify for this External Affairs Specialist position at the IC-12 level, you must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IC-11 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Experience may be obtained in the federal government, a state or local government, or private sector, and must demonstrate the following: Developing and coordinating emergency management communication strategies for a variety of audiences; Developing and documenting short and long-range plans, initiatives, and outreach strategies for internal and external stakeholders; and Responding to general inquiries from stakeholders, congressional, media or the general public.
