Responsibilities

Works with program directors to prepare background materials for proposed scientific program development of new and ongoing research initiatives.

Establishes working relationships with, and works closely with, Institute staff and staff at other institutes and Federal agencies to monitor advances and trends in science that are relevant to NIAs mission and DABs program priorities.

Assists the program directors with development of research initiatives such as Requests for Applications (RFAs), Requests for Information (RFIs) and Program Announcements (PAs), drafting scientific and administrative language for program staff.

Reviews grant applications to determine the appropriate Program Class Codes to assign, and codes grant applications for scientific/disease content.

Provides assistance in establishing strategies, agendas, and operational plans for scientific conferences/meetings; takes notes/minutes at the meetings; prepares summaries of the proceedings; and prepares post-conference/meeting materials. Coordinates with staff on the distribution of the materials. Conducts independent analyses of grant portfolios as requested by program directors and searches the scientific literature to identify research areas to be promoted.

Analyzes grant portfolio to assist DAB in meeting goals for enhanced diversity in research and career development opportunities. Analyzes success rates of underserved investigators.

Develops presentation materials for program directors and DAB Director on sponsored research and on aspects germane to the research portfolios, including material for the web pages.

Reviews grant applications for compliance with NIH and NIA policies in several critical areas including clinical trials and involvement of human subjects, care and use of live vertebrate animals, involvement of foreign institutions, use of embryonic stem cells, use of hazardous materials and agents, public access to results of research, financial conflict of interest, and data management and sharing, including genomic data sharing.

Works with program directors and provides support in scientific management and policies, technical administration, and programmatic evaluation of research grants, cooperative agreements, and program projects.

Required

A relevant health-related degree (e.g., M.S., Ph.D.)

Skills and experience in the coordination of research projects and/or clinical studies

Strong organizational skills

Excellent written and oral communication, including strong skills in developing presentations and briefing materials

Self-starter capable of working independently and as a team player
