Responsibilities

In close collaboration with the Board of Directors and Director of Operations, the IED will oversee the primary functions of the organization: planning, management, finances, conference management, and communications for the organization.
Promotes a positive transition from current organizational model to one with the Director of Operations poised as its future Executive Director
Assists the board in evaluating leadership and organizational structure at all levels of the organization and managing needed changes
Provides mentorship in areas of program, organizational development, financial management and communications; and oversees implementation of plans and policies authorized by the Board
Promotes an environment of active listening and learning - while building trust among Board, staff, and stakeholders - to provide a fresh perspective for healthy association growth and development, ensuring the overall capacity to support its infrastructure and continued growth
Works closely with the Board to understand, develop and carry out USASP’s strategic vision
Work closely with the Board to build trust and guide them through transitioning to a healthy governance model
Keeps Board members fully informed on the condition of the organization and influencing factors
With the Board president, works to effectively utilize the talents and abilities of current members
With the Board president, identify and engage new Board members in USASP’s mission
Analyzes leadership structure and human resource allocation and management (including the use of contract help), and propose effective strategies that enable advancement of the organization’s mission and vision
Maintains a climate that attracts, keeps and motivates top-quality staff and contractors
Provides input about recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel (paid staff and contractors)
Creates an atmosphere of trust and openness and a set of processes and procedures that will allow staff and board members to be invested in a healthy foundation and growth process and engage in organizational success
Encourages staff development and education
Reviews, maintains and improves organizational financial practices, as needed
Ensures that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work
Engage stakeholders in a process of strategic analysis and ensure that their leadership is integral to the organization’s direction
Encourages membership engagement and development
Facilitates productive collaborative relationships between association members, staff and board members

Required

Master’s level degree in a related field and/or minimum 8 years successful experience in non-profit professional association management
Minimum of two years’ experience in transitional management
Ability to foster participatory decision making and team building
Leadership skills, creative thinking, conflict management, “change-agent” skills, and demonstrated follow-through ability
Strong experience in organizational infrastructure to build the foundation for healthy association growth and development
Proven ability to foster organizational relationships across cultural boundaries
Active Interest in the organization’s mission
Demonstrated success in fundraising and fiscal oversight of budgets in excess of $750,000
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in conference oversight with 500+ attendees
Ability to attend USASP’s annual conference (the 2025 conference is planned for April 29- May 2, 2025 in Chicago)
