Responsibilities

Manages the design process to ensure compliance with Arlington Public Schools vision, goals, and constraints.
Participates in the development of cost, scope, schedule, and quality goals for school projects.
Coordinates the review of designs, plans, and specifications to ensure project goals are met.
Oversees quality control/assurance to ensure contractors comply with contract documents and codes.
Facilitates various committees and public review processes for project approvals.
Coordinates with stakeholders to reflect their advice in project designs.
Assists in the development and implementation of quality control and safety procedures.
Prepares progress reports, tracks change orders, cost estimates, and budget status.
Meets with community groups to build support for school projects.
Oversees project completion, closeout processes, and warranty work.
Assists in contractor prequalification, bid reviews, and construction contract awards.

Required

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in architecture, engineering, planning, construction management, or related field.
Considerable experience in the design and construction arena, facility planning, urban planning, or related area. Work related to schools is preferred.
Knowledge of facilities planning, design, and construction management principles and practices, and of state and local standards governing the design and construction of school buildings.
Knowledge of the Arlington Public School System and Arlington County government structure, departments, regulations, and procedures is a plus.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university architecture, engineering, construction management or another field pertinent to the essential functions of the class (or an associate degree and four years of directly related experience) (or 12 years of varying levels of architectural, engineering or construction project management / construction experience in the office and field with listed references).
Seven (7) years of construction project management experience, including at least 5 years of public school’s capital management experience (or equivalent) and/or professional architectural or engineering license (References required).
Nine (9) years of project management experience, including at least 7 years of public school’s capital management experience (or equivalent) and/or professional architectural or engineering license (References required).
Professional architectural or engineering license preferred.

Preferred

Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Experience with preparing and delivering public presentations and experience in facilitating community groups, including the ability to stay calm, respectful, and professional under pressure.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment, managing multiple priorities.
Knowledge of facilities design and construction management principles and practices.
Knowledge of state and local standards governing the design and construction of buildings.
Knowledge of techniques, standards, and procedures required to monitor construction activities.
Strong problem-solving and project management skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to mentor and train junior colleagues.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of non-industry contacts such as school administrators and educational staff.
Ability to interpret read and review plans, prints, design documents, and specifications, to ensure compliance with all provisions.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and to fully document all necessary project activities.
High ethical standards.
A driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
Professional architectural or engineering license preferred.
