Responsibilities
Initiate, design and execute laboratory or field studies concerned with identifying characteristics of exposure to ergonomic, biomechanical, physiological and psychosocial risk factors in the workplace that are related to the development of cumulative trauma disorders or acute injury among exposed workers.
Conduct research independently or as a lead of a research team, through a series of complete and conceptually related research studies.
Provide consultation and advice to the agency in areas of personal research expertise including but not limited to the development of policy and educational documents, participation in review and advisory panels of national and international agencies, and review of scientific and programmatic proposals for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and other government regulatory agencies, such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
OR B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: planning and executing projects related to occupational or public health and disseminating findings through written outputs and presentations.
