Responsibilities

Assist NRL scientists in the verification, quality control, and testing of atmospheric models, and evaluation of model behavior by comparing them with observations and alternative model datasets.
Evaluate the atmosphere, aerosols, and coupled phenomena in the Earth System focusing on the evaluation of predictability, statistical post-processing techniques, process-based diagnostics, and physical parameterizations for numerical weather and aerosol prediction systems.
Facilitate scientific analyses and technical developments by NRL scientists through running numerical models, curating datasets, and assisting with the writing and documentation of relevant software.
Responsible for the efficient and timely execution of assigned tasks and assisting with the preparation of referred publications, presentations for scientific meetings and workshops, and reporting and presentations for sponsors.
Review results of other scientists active in the same or related areas of research; interact with scientists from industry, academia, other federal laboratories, and national and international operational centers.
Exchange ideas/solutions to satisfy requirements for the improvement of the Navy's numerical weather prediction capabilities.
Lead or assist in the transition of research and code development to the Navy's operational environment.
Use and apply programming languages, including but not limited to Python and the UNIX operating system.
Prepare necessary documentation for any modifications made to existing research and/or operational code.
Prepare written and oral reports on progress for interested members of the meteorological community and operational personnel in Naval weather activities.
Assist in examining extended-range precipitation prediction skill in the Navy ESPC operational forecasts and forecasts from other operational S2S models.
Contribute to evaluating and transitioning of real-time post-processing in Navy ESPC.
Assist in developing and evaluating new extended-range precipitation products for Navy ESPC.
Assist in preparing validation test report for NAAPS 2.0.
Assist in verifying and testing updates to the NAAPS 2.0 aerosol prediction system.

Required

Bachelors and two (2) years or more related experience
2+ years of experience with Python coding, and knowledge of Metpy, Pandas, Cartopy, Xarray, Matplotlib, and Numpy
Data processing with GRIB and NETCDF
R statistical programming
Remote code development in Linux environments
MS in Meteorology or related Physical Sciences field
Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance
Final Secret with NATO Secret to full access to government IT systems
U.S. citizenship required

Preferred

2+ years of research in the application of Machine Learning to rapid cyclogenesis in mid-latitude weather phenomena
Travel <10%
