Responsibilities

Responsible for complex accounting, analysis, and financial reporting tasks related to all of the balance sheet and income statement accounts for the UC San Diego Foundation and all gift funds on campus.
Analyze, review, and prepare financial analysis and reports from complex data and information.
Prepare and post journal entries for monthly, quarterly, and annual fiscal close, and reconciliation of financial activity to ledgers for monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial records, with a heavy emphasis on investments and endowment accounting, all in accordance with GAAP and GASB accounting requirements.
Participate in and initiate when applicable, process improvement, policy development, and review of financial transactions for compliance with GASB accounting standards.
Research and provide routine fiscal advice and guidance to faculty, department fund administrators and Principal Investigators related to Regents and Foundation gift funds.
Use professional accounting concepts as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of accounting practices and organizational policies and procedures to resolve complex assignments where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors and multiple sources.
Exercise judgment within defined accounting procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Demonstrate ability to meet deadlines with competing requirements and complexity while working in an environment of fluctuating priorities and frequent interruptions.

Required

Thorough knowledge of accounting function and assignments.
Significant demonstrated knowledge and work experience in the application of the generally accepted theories, principles and practice of accounting.
Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and GASB pronouncements, as well as standards related to internal controls.
Proven ability to analyze new and/or existing complex accounting pronouncements issued by GASB, as well as standard accounting procedures.
Ability to independently gather, organize, and perform accounting-related analysis to complete work assignments.
Demonstrated ability to analyze and summarize complex accounting data, perform complex reconciliations, prepare financial reports, and resolve complex accounting problems independently.
Ability to comprehend, and evaluate detailed accounting and financial documents with accuracy.
Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing at all levels within the organization.
Ability to write and explain policies and procedures after analyzing business requirements, regulations, and similar information.
Proven effective oral and written communication skills in conversation or to compose concise and accurate business correspondence.
Strong ability to develop, understand, and apply policies and procedures including the ability to train others.
Thorough knowledge of financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Demonstrated knowledge of systems and best practices of internal control.
Effective use and interpretation of GAAP, GASB, UC Accounting Manual, CA Dept of Insurance, State of CA Board of Equalization, State of CA Franchise Tax Board and IRS regulations as necessary.
Thorough knowledge of common desktop / web applications.
Proven ability to utilize computers, software programs, and internet-based resources to accomplish work effectively and efficiently.
Demonstrated experience in the use of software applications such as Word and Excel for preparation of correspondence and spreadsheets.
Must have demonstrated intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
Demonstrated skill to learn and apply various programs and databases with the ability to remain abreast of technology changes and adjust to system systems as required.
Thorough knowledge of analytical procedures used in accounting projects of moderate to semi-complex scope.
Demonstrated ability to utilize independent decision-making skills.
Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize tasks with strong use of initiative and precise attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with competing requirements and complexity while working in an environment of fluctuating priorities and frequent interruptions.
Use of appropriate follow-up techniques are required.
Must be able to recognize problem issues/situations and apply resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to implement problem-solving and use follow-through to ensure effective resolution.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills, with ability to interact in a positive manner, using tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
Demonstrated experience in accounting for complex investment portfolios, including equity and fixed income securities, venture capital, real estate and other investments.
Clearly demonstrated experience in applying and overseeing the application of proper book and market value accounting rules.
Understanding the nature of endowment or mutual fund accounting processes and allocations.
Demonstrated experience and proficiency in full-scale computerized general ledger financial accounting software.
Prior hands-on experience in financial statements preparation and analysis including, but not limited to, preparation of journal entries, account reconciliation, key entry, and output control.
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance and five (5) years of professional accounting experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to understand and implement UC San Diego Foundation, University of California Office of the President and San Diego campus' policies and procedures, as well as the organizational structure of the entities administrative offices.
Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Prior demonstrated experience serving as an expert resource to provide guidance and support to lower level accounting staff.
Ability to review and assess workflow and processes and assist with redesign of work flow or work product to ensure quality and timeliness of delivery of work.

Preferred

Knowledge of and experience in the use of Oracle Financials Cloud, Blackbaud eCRM, and/or other relevant information systems and tools.
