Responsibilities
Scope Design Needs: Proactively define and address design needs for projects with undefined parameters, navigating organizational and project ambiguity effectively.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with engineers, researchers, and stakeholders to develop product design principles, strategies, roadmaps, and success measures that align with client needs.
Deliver Design Excellence: Create and document high-quality design deliverables, including design systems, prototypes, UI designs, wireframes, and annotated style guides from kickoff to handoff.
User-Centered Research: Plan, lead, and execute various user research approaches and usability testing using low- and high-fidelity prototypes, as well as live systems.
Synthesize Insights: Translate research findings into actionable design recommendations and decisions to enhance usability and accessibility.
Facilitate Workshops: Lead product design workshops and presentations with clients or stakeholders to establish alignment and foster innovation.
Inclusive Design Practices: Partner with designers to ensure deliverables are inclusive, accessible, and use plain language to support diverse user needs.
Team Leadership: Provide guidance to junior designers and team members, fostering professional growth and maintaining high-quality standards.
Problem Solving: Analyze and address complex business and user challenges, aligning solutions with project goals and requirements.
Client Interaction: Represent the team in meetings, workshops, and training sessions, demonstrating professionalism and thought leadership.

Required
4-6+ years of experience in product design, web design, interaction design, or equivalent roles.
Expertise in creating high-quality designs using design systems, atomic design principles, responsive layouts, and branded UI elements.
Proven experience in usability testing and transforming research insights into actionable design improvements.
2+ years of project team leadership experience.
2+ years of experience facilitating workshops or presentations with clients or in a consulting role.
Eligibility to meet government security clearance requirements.
Preferred
2+ years of remote work or remote freelancing experience.
2+ years of consulting experience in a professional services, government, or federal setting.
Familiarity with the United States Web Design System (USWDS) or VA Design System.
Experience conducting remote-only research, workshops, or validation sessions.
Strong understanding of cross-matrixed environments.
