How to Update Your Tech Resume
Table of Contents
Looking to update your tech resume? These are the 8 things to implement immediately.
DO THIS
- 1 pagers are out of date – If you’re early in your career (1 -3 YOE) a 1 page resume is fine. But don’t be afraid to explain your role and accomplishments in detail. 2 page resumes for 3+ YOE will do fine.
- Customize it for the company – boost your chances of success by ensuring your resume reflects the values of your target company as well as core keywords a recruiter would look for.
- Focus on impact – And get quantitative. Recruiters want to see what you’ve done, how you’ve done it, and the results. So don’t shy away from numbers.
- Your tools – Tech stacks matter and ensuring you come into a job knowing how to navigate the tools that are necessary for your function are critical. Look through the job description and think about the company when determining the tools to list.
- Get Reviews – Preferably a recruiter friend, or colleague in a similar role at a different company. You want your resume to be crisp with no errors before sending it across.
- Send as PDF – Save your resume as a PDF before applying. This will ensure that it retains formatting when it’s received by your target company recruiter.
DON’T DO THIS
- Paragraphs – Stick to bullet points using a simplified version of the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
- Design – Avoid this at all cost. Your resume should be simple, Arial font, 11 points, black with no hidden tables, emojis or italics.
